Fleas 

 Appearance:  Dark brown to black in color and approximately one-sixteenth of an inch long. Six legs and a flat body.

Diet:  Blood

Habits: Found on dogs & cats year round in warmer climates & humid weather. Fleas can jump 12 -14 inches horizontally with adults living one to two months without feeding. Female fleas will lay up to 800 eggs during a lifetime. Lifespan of a flea on a dog is more than 90 days . During this time a single pair of fleas can produce millions of offspring.

Deer Ticks

 Appearance:  Hard round body, dark  reddish-brown in color with eight legs. About one-eight of an inch long.

Diet:  Blood.

Habits: Ticks live on the bodies of mammals, birds & reptiles. They will feed and  their bodies will swell  considerably. Ticks can lay dormant for long periods of time even up to years. Eggs are laid in carpets, floor cracks and under baseboards. They will hatch anywhere from 20 - 60 days and will wait for contact with a suitable host. Tick are known carriers of Lyme disease, typhus and encephalitis.

Brown Ticks

 Appearance:  Soft bodies, brown in color with eight legs. About one-eight of an inch long.

Diet:  Blood.

  • Your pet will have uncontrollable itching & scratching when fleas are present.

  • Tiny black specks that look like pepper is actually dried blood and flea residue.

  • People will have small red specks that itch from flea bites, usually on the arms & legs.

  • Wash  any pet bedding in hot water & detergent.

  • Vacuum floors and furniture thoroughly especially where pets have been. This will help remove any eggs and adults.  Fleas like to go deep into carpeting and furniture making it difficult to eliminate them.

  • Bathe & groom pets  on a regular basis outside.

  • Treat your pet with a flea control product on the same day as your house is  scheduled for pest control. Check with your veterinarian as to which product is best for your pet. Flea control take several visits from your pest control company as eggs hatch at various times and are naturally protected from pesticides during certain stages of their cycle. Most pesticides only kill adult fleas leaving the eggs to develop.

  • Bathe & groom you pets  regularly.

  • Inspect pets for ticks on a regular basis. Look behind & in the ears, between the digits of paws & under the leg pits. Ticks like warm areas on your pet.

  • Talk to your  veterinarian  about treatment & prevention. They can recommend the best preventative treatment for your pet.

  • Clear wood piles & scrap lumber from the yard. Ticks like to live under wood and can stay dormant for long periods of time.

  • Ticks can also be found in mulch beds. If having large amounts of mulch delivered for landscaping purposes, also schedule a spray treatment as soon as the mulch is laid down.
